Hey everyone,

I’ve tried asking Veeam’s sales department a couple times, but can’t seem to get an answer from them.

Simple question. There is Veeam B&R and Essentials. Essentials seems more full featured and is more $$$. But I want to split the license (2 socket license) between two 1 x socket Hyper-V hosts. It is more inexpensive than buying 2 x B&R licenses.

Does anyone know if one can do this and be in compliance??

Thanks in advance!

it is not licensed per host it is licensed per socket on any host that is going to be backed up.
So which servers are going to be backed up and what is the combined number of sockets.

Veeam is one of them products where the support/sale advice is woefully poor compared to the product itself.
i wouldn’t take anything Veeam tell you as being gospel.

This is a wrong statement. There is one product - Veeam Backup & Replication. It has a free version (Backup Free) and a paid one with 3 licenses types: Standard, Enterprise and Enterprise Plus, licensed by the number of CPU sockets you need to protect (back up).

However, if you’re SMB and looking for a discount, we have a special offer: Veeam Backup Essentials, coming in bundles of 2,4 or 6 CPU sockets license of the same Standard, Ent, Ent Plus types, with a significant price discount. So, no difference in features among the same license type and Veeam Backup Essentials is cheaper.

The problem is that you have 2 Hyper-V hosts you want to protect and looking for the most convenient (smart and reasonably prized) option? Then, I’d suggest to go for Veeam Backup Essentials license with a bundle of 2 sockets. You will be able to set up one, two or infinity of backup servers as long as you back up the same Hyper-V hosts you take care of. And there is absolutely no need to split the license as long as those servers belong to the same company.

Thanks for the reply Andrew… your reply is a little cryptic as I passed it by a couple of eyes and it isn’t totally clear. Here’s what I have and what I would like to know:

  1. I now know that Veeam Essentials is what I am looking for.

AND

  1. If I am leasing 2 hosted dedicated servers (each being a 1 socket bare metal server), both in the same rack that I manage but have Hyper-V installed on each one, and each one is managing multiple tenants of my clients, Can I purchase 1 x 2 socket Veeam essentials license and install VE on each Hyper-V host and still be compliant?

Thanks,

Andrew

Sorry for inconvenience, I was a bit too much excited about this topic:)

Back to the point, yes, you can purchase one single license of Veeam Backup Essentials for 2 sockets, install Veeam on each Hyper-V and be compliant. That’s exactly the solution for your situation.
