So, I am at a cust site today, and I see this:
Water issues I ask?
No…not that we know of…
Ehhhh…
You all know where I am standing, right?
The room with the expensive blinky light things in it…
Yeah…that room…
The last room in the building you ever want to see water in..
And this isn’t why I am here, it’s not a priority item, it isn’t even an item..
Where is the wall..I need to use it for something…

We once had a brand new building addition created, to replace a part of the building that had collapsed in a storm…great! We got a dedicated spot for our network gear to cover that third of the building, dedicated cooling, dedicated…water heater and janitorial supply closet, including two bathrooms and an unclean, still full mop bucket??

Like when you see the Home Depot bucket in the middle of a room, and it’s half full of water.
And you are like…hmmm

Even better, because the floor of the two bathrooms right next to the “network closet” never seemed to be clean or wet, so where exactly did this water come from and what was it used on, and do I really want those answers??

Absorbent sock, water stain, and a dehumidifier and no one knows about water issues? I can determine the few potential scenarios from this:
A. Someone is lying.
B. Someone is suffering from memory loss.
C. You have not asked the correct person yet. (And apparently they have not communicated the issue with those who you did ask.) (Or those people are lying or have memory loss, but that feels like I’m getting too deep in the weeds on this now.)
Did you ever find out why they were having water issues?

Yeah, it isn’t hard to follow the trail. The door has a cheapo Home Depot sweep that fell apart, so there is a huge space under the door, the sidewalk outside is in an inside corner, and I would bet my paycheck nobody has cleaned the gutters out in years…
[C. You have not asked the correct person yet. ]
There is likely no correct person here, it is a branch office, I suspect
nobody there knows anything about anything, and nobody from the
main office ever got told anything happened because nobody considered it important…
I run into this over and over with these types of organizations…sigh

The correct person is usually:
- Maintenance/Facilities
- Cleaning Crew
- Usually an engineer/handyman type
These are the people that you need to befriend, especially the first two, as they often feel “unseen” by office staff.

When I first started here 5 years ago, I walked into the server room and saw a couple of restaurant dough trays (about 2’x4’, 4 inches deep fiberglass trays) on top of server racks reached up to one to see what they had sitting in them… and got wet! Both of them about an eighth of an inch from overflowing. Catching drips from ceiling when ac unit above was frozen up during deplorably hot weather and then thaws when the units overheat and switch off…
Since fixed, but took like two years to get it done. Good thing I looked, because nobody else here had been here long enough to know to empty them regularly. Sigh. Nearly lost knowledge almost led to lost servers..

Yep, and happy birthday! If you update the part of your profile, it’s almost instantaneous and will add a cake next to your name!
