In the process of migrating computers to my new domain this morning. I had ONE workstation I was supposed to exclude, just ONE, and somehow I dropped the ball and it was added to the list. This system was running an analysis process since Thursday night and wasn’t supposed to finish until Monday or Tuesday.
Now I’ve got to call the engineer boss man and explain to him that I just cost him a couple of days. Sonofa… I hate making mistakes!

I was going to say that you’ll laugh about this later on, but, No… I don’t think so.

Yeah… I don’t think so. We specifically talked about this system and I assured him it wouldn’t get migrated. Ugh.

Something similar happened to me a few weeks back when I rebooted a NAS at the end of the day. Lost two days of a in progress data translation for a CAD system.

Yikes that sucks… Yes, we are only human. Hopefully they were understanding on that one, it’s tough to know what’s being utilized all the time.
When I was about 16 I got thrown in jail for drunk and disorderly conduct, I was framed. My parents were not impressed. They started out on the hour and a half journey to get me, but a blizzard forced them to turn back. So I sat another day, but by the time they could get me the next day they had totally cooled down and almost felt sorry for me because I had to sit in jail for 2 days. Call him right away.

Lol, Not any more than your about to experience. Admit fault and move on. After that it’s on them to move on from it. No one died as a result of this right?

Haha no, no one has died. I am good at admitting my mistakes, just hate making them.
Blame it on the cosmic interaction of a stray neutrino flipping the bit just as the process was starting, he’ll believe it.
And if you believe it, I have some really really nice vaporware to sell you stock in
Hopefully the rest of your weekend goes better - look at the positive, better that you called today than to wait until Monday - so he’s only neg 2 days instead of neg 4

Inform him now. Maybe there is a mitigation process that can be activated. Worst case there isn’t, but let him know now so he’s not blindsided come Monday.

I’ve definitely let him know. Best I can do. He’s not responding to me so I’m guessing he’s busy doing something. I know he’s been up in the mountains working on a cabin of his to get it ready for the winter so he’s probably not in cell range.

A few years ago I read about a tech installing a new raid array for a customer. The array was a backup for their existing raid array that was approaching a petabyte. As he was configuring the new array to match existing one he had two consoles open, one to each array.
(You can see where this is going.)
When it came time to initialize the new array he actually initialized the existing array.
(No they hadn’t tested their backups.)
Hope that puts your day in perspective.

Jail cell was looking pretty good to that guy.

Ouch. Mine seems pretty minor as nothing was ultimately lost besides time. A petabyte of data? I’m guessing he was fired…

Eeep.
I often do hard disk formatting/cloning on my main desktop at home and I always stop and think VERY carefully about what I’m about to do before I push the final Go button. If I have any doubt at all I’ll actually go back and start from scratch to make sure I’m not going to erase one of my disks by accident!
Originally I used to physically disconnect my hard drives just to be sure, I don’t anymore but I still have a minor panic as I’m pushing the button.
