Our HR department is making official job titles and descriptions for everyone for the first time ever.

I just met one-on-one with one of the HR folks…

Basically if I disappeared, they’d need to hire 4-6 people to know how to do what I do…

I’m kindof depressed now

Aww, don’t be depressed. Think of it as a “selling point”.

“If I leave, you have to spend x dollars to replace me. You should just pay me what you’d pay people to replace me”

Sounds to me like they just gave you loads of evidence to take to management to justify a bigger IT team and a nice raise for yourself

I wouldnt think thats something to be depressed about, but more to boast about…

So ask for a raise equivalent to 4-6 people.

I get it! This is my last week at current job and they just realized how much I actually do. (I’ve always said that if your stuff works, then I am doing my job.) I gave 2.5 weeks notice, but they haven’t started hiring a replacement yet, so I am having to “band-aid” train people to keep the site going after I leave. So far I have had to train 4 people.

Well at least they didn’t tell you to vacate the building

Yep, IT in SMBs tend to do a lot of different things, and generally do them well. When HR gets these job description documents they try to foist one description on everyone and for IT at least, it simply doesn’t work.

There is one title that works…“IT Department”

That’s what I have under my name. If someone wants to be specific I tell them Network Admin/Wizard. But for me, IT Dept pretty much encompasses all the different little jobs I do.

Sounds like a start to a conversation about getting 4-6 pay checks a week.

3 Spice ups

Then they should be paying you 4 - 6 times the entry-level offering, right? If not … why not? It sounds like it’s time to start asking some tough questions!

Don’t let them guilt you! Ask for money and a whiskey fridge.

To be fair to HR (which does NOT come naturally to me, so be patient…) it’s situations like this that create those insane job descriptions we’ve all seen. They actually think these job descriptions describe what you used to do, so of course they can find someone ELSE with those skills. No problem.
