Hi all,

I just recently got my CCNA Routing and Switching more than a week ago, I am now clueless on how do I get a network admin job, I updated my LinkedIn profile to show recruiter or hiring manager to reach me out, but nothing, and most recruiter contact me to offer job for IT Tech Support position, which is I am at right now. I also applied to some job boards: Indeed, ziprecruiter, dice and numbers of sites.

I have 5 year experience in IT Tech Support and also I have A plus certifcation which still current, and I also have a university degree

If anyone can give suggestion, much appreciated, thank you

There’s no magic “you’ve got a cert now all recruiters and employers will suddenly beat a path to your door.”

You’ve got to search for jobs, network (the kind without wires or antennas) and apply just like before. Maybe have a resume writing service help you with your resume.

Keep plugging away.

Ok thank you, I already submitted job applications, but I guess it will take sometimes

Yes. Yes, it will. But don’t just rely on submitting applications. Follow up with phone calls. Network both in person and using social media. If possible, consider relocating to a different place that has better opportunities. Most of all, persevere. It’ll happen.

Good luck to you.

Thank you so much, I will do that, relocating is not a possible option for now due to my son’s condition, but I can commute

Congrats on passing your exam. Like others have said, it can take time to get responses on jobs you’ve applied for.

Additionally, do you have direct experience with networking and is that listed on your resume? Experience is usually higher on the list of boxes to check than certificates. If you don’t have that experience, are there opportunities with your current company to get it?

Agree that experience is very important. If you can get some networking experience at your current position do it.

If you can’t, buy some old cheap cisco equipment off ebay or the like and setup a home lab. If you can’t do that instead setup a lab network virtually with GNS3. Add vlans, routing, ACLs, etc to your lab network. Put your home lab network on your resume. Be ready to discuss the details in person if asked.

Aside from that don’t give up and don’t be picky. Expect to be underpaid and overworked in your first gig in a new IT field. The company is taking a gamble by hiring a less experienced tech; work your butt off and show them their gamble paid off. You’ll make up for it when you change jobs in two years to get the great-paying job you actually want.

Find a new job is like dating. The more effort you put in the greater your chances are at having more options to choose from. Be polite. Be honest. But most of all be proactive.

Congrats on the cert! It’s something that I need to do at some point.

I would look at investing in a lab and go nuts. It’s great that you passed the cert, but can you apply what you’ve learned in real life scenarios?

Hi Guys, thank you so much for all your replies. I am sorry I just have a chance to reply.
I don’t have any experience in networking, just 6 years in IT as a helpdesk/IT support, during that time, I just deal with layer 1 networking on laptop and workstation mostly windows OS, a little bit of Mac OS.
I know it’s way different from I have been doing, but I can start doing lab like crazy, so far I have: 3 switches 3750X, 1 router 2911, 300 series router, 3460 L3 switch and 2960 router
I just have to connect them and set them in my rack which I have not doing it yet
And on 27th I will have an interview for entry level network engineer
I will write again after the interview
