I have a user that has reported that her computer will automatically lock as she is working. This happens without any keystrokes that would warrant Windows to lock (i.e., Win+L, Ctrl+Alt+Del > Lock, etc.).

I have Googled what may be causing this and how to resolve such an issue, to no avail. I cannot find the root cause nor can I fix the issue, other than advising the user to reboot their computer until this happens again.

Nothing pertaining to this shows in her Event Log, there’s no GPO set to lock users out after X minutes, there are no needed Windows Updates on her laptop, etc. I haven’t braved going through her Registry Editor since I have no wish to mess up the registry with my rudimentary understanding of it.

I am sure I am not alone in this so I come to you, humbly.

This is a Windows 10 computer in a domain setting.

She has patches pending, reboot it, while you may not see them, they may have installed and require a reboot, this was true of older builds that don’t automatically do so.

Even if you believe there are none, reboot it and have her check it

Thank you for the reply, Rod-IT. I’ll get back to you if this happens again.

I’m going to run over to have her reboot.

I seen this in the RC and 1511 build, higher builds just reboot if it is outside the ‘working hours’ window

Faulty keyboard?

My first thought was a sticky windows key and when she presses the “L” then could explain why it happens??

I had a similar issue but it wouldn’t lock while she was working. However, the lock time was at like 20 seconds of inactivity. I searched high and low and messed with lock settings for almost a week. Then after finding nothing I went through all the changes made over the previous week to the issue and found that due to configuring Edge with an Outlook connector to email directly out of Edge, the PC would automatically lock in a short time. I found no way to configure the timing and removed the setup. May not be the users issues but maybe this will trigger a thought of maybe another connector in use

Hi

let her log in to another machine , if the locking stops then you 'd know its a profile issue , delete it from the advanced system settings window. If she has the same problem on a different machine then try to force gp update.

hope this will help

Rod-IT, your fix is actually what resolved the issue here. Thanks a lot for your input.

To everyone else: Thank you for your answers. I will keep this in mind if this issue replicates itself in the future if what I did to fix the issue this time does not work then.
