People here sometimes leave on the first break, never to be seen again. Shortest actual work was under 2 hours. People frequently no show sometime during the first few weeks. In 2.5 years, we have had almost 150 new employees. We usually have around 25 actual staff members. Every time I walk in to the employment office, they ask “Are you still working at XXX?” and when I say yes, they are impressed. One says that I should have some sort of award, lol.

Now that I have this job I really appreciate EVERY OTHER job I have had.

I am holding out for some changes that will occur in a few more months and then I am out of here. (Leaving area, most likely)

It’s not an IT job, although the boss sometimes gives me IT work to do on the side.

My boss is short tempered, dishonest, entitled and generally an awfull person. She talks about employees rudely, calls us names (usually not directly), makes derogatory references, spreads rumors, uses profanity excessively, and is generally the most nasty person I have ever met. She schedules people to work shifts back to back very often (Like 3-10pm, then back at 6am for another shift.) and split shifts with 2-3 hour breaks in the middle. She alters time cards, figures overtime wrong, steals tips, and “forgets” to pay commisions.

Also, the pay is shit, lol.

am here just to be credited for 1st reply.

nah just joking. is this the worst person you encountered yet? I hardly seen a company with a full legion of angels, usually some sheeps with some wolfs mix inbetween. So mabbe you can take this as a training experience, if you can handle such and such a person, you probably can handle anybody. If it is really that terribly bad, it is good for everyone to create a case with the HR…

She is HR. Owner.

I have learned a lot about being able to deal with her (with the help of treatment and counseling, lol)

SMB.

What can I say? Unfortunately, there are those individuals out there that really don’t understand the value of people within a business environment.

The hospitality industry (especially in USA) is notorious for the way that they treat their staff. Yes, there are good places, but far too many where they show a complete lack of real management skills. They often think that they are just being “hard nosed business people”, but they seldom realise that their attitude creates an atmosphere that can actually cause issues for the business. Who wants to eat in a restaurant where the staff don’t care.

All I would suggest is keep your head down, learn how not to do management, then take the first opportunity to get out of there. A toxic environment is never good for your mental health, and it’s all too easy to get into bad habits that will then affect how you work in the future, to detriment of your career.

Welcome to rural 'merica and the restuarant and hospitality industry.

I was with you until this line.

Okay, you have a crappy job at a crappy place. Got it. It sucks. You have an exit plan. That’s good. But don’t tar the land of opportunity with that brush. Or even the entire food service or hospitality industries. Sure, they require active work for low pay - that’s the nature of unskilled/semi-skilled labor.

Working for a foul-mouthed, ill-tempered crook is no picnic - regardless of the industry or location.

We’ve all had jobs that suck, but don’t burn the bridge until you have something better lined up

Just going to chuck this one in there as it appears to have been missed… Why are you still there and not somewhere else?

How old is this lady? I have seen my share of foul mouthed females but never in a work environment where I was employed.

I live in the suburban area less than an hour from several major cities in my state and had the exact same thing happen with an MSP instead. It certainly isn’t unique to the industry or the area. It probably won’t change, and you should always be looking for a way out of truly toxic environments. That being said, the best time to look for a job is when you already have one, so don’t quit out of spite until you are ready to move on.

I guess it’s kinda purgatory.

Well, it’s kinda embarassing, but I had a run in with the law and I am on formal probation for another four months. I am required to keep a job and stay in the county while on probation, and full time jobs are kinda hard to find around here; especially when you have a crime on record. Not allowed to have a smartphone or computer while on probation either, just work related, while at work. I can post here due to the fact I use spiceworks to monitor the work network and keep an inventory.

Please don’t throw stones, I am doing my time and have paid for my mistake many times over.

I will probably be asking for advice once I am done with my probation. I think that my only real chance to succeed now will be self employment again; I am not too keen on it having done it for 10 years in the past, I feel like I can do it again. The community I am in now is small (10k people) and simply won’t support many computer fixer jobs, especiall when everyone knows you have a record.

Unlike a lot of technical people, I am very good with my “soft” skills, and I love to help people.

PS, I have never experienced being smart as a negative, but being on probation and being widely regarded as a very smart person is a huge negative. Every move I make seems to be somehow sinister and I have been required to take multiple polygraphs to stay out of trouble with probation. It’s been an eye opening experience. Also, if you are charged with anything, my advice is… Don’t talk to the police, they are going to twist what you say to meet what they want to hear. Get a lawyer other than the public defender. Also, don’t f*ck with the law. Even being charged with a crime is enough to ruin your life, let alone a conviction.

PSS. Don’t say shit online that you would not say in person. Ever. People might take it seriously; the police will, I can tell you for sure on that one.

Late 50’s I guess. Born rich, oil money I think. Spends twice my salary on wine at dinner, annually. lol. Three houses (wtf you need three houses?)

One positive thing I will say is she works a lot for a rich person… although mostly she just cant trust anyone and has to micromanage everything.

EDIT- I am sure a lot of rich people work hard. What I meant was for someone who doesn’t need to work, she works a LOT.

This.

Please stop stereotyping.

OMG forgot the best part. There is a microphone at the desk so owner can hear everything that is said while she is in her office…

It’s there so she can “help us”

I work night shift so she’s gone…but day shift is real bad.

stories like these as well as having to see how meals I enjoy are made is why I never wanted to go into the restaurant industry. I’ve heard the most boss horror stories from that industry.

tumblr_mnbbjz2XpF1qdzs7mo1_500.gifRun…

I would be unplugging that first off. There is NO reason for someone to be snooping on me at work like that. I would expect that kind of thing maybe in a prison, but no way in an office\work environment.

Are there cameras too? If not I’d save every fart I have and let them rip right into the mic. That is bullshit.

C’mon. She’s just trying to “help” her employees.
