I know we all have them! Out of 45 users I support, I have 1 that will gripe about every little thing…
And her go to line is “well at my last job, IT didn’t do it this way”…UGH!!!

backhand of truth is usually required for such things.
HR usually gets all upset though if you hit users. Totally up to you though.

My ideal reply would be this: “Here’s an idea…you don’t tell me how to do my job at this company - not your last one - and I don’t try to give you tips on how to be a moaning-faced, misanthropic, ignorant kill-joy.”
Of course, that’s one for the grey matter only

I hate that line. I’ve actually told someone to their face because the request was so stupid that “Well the IT at your last place were morons and should’ve been fired”

Well apparently she is great at her job. I have brought it up every year in my review “we will look into it”. I think thats just the way she is though.
Shes single, no kids or pet. Shes going to wind up being that women that lives on the end of the street with 100 cats that nobody likes.

If your last job was so great, why are you here? Perhaps they got tired of your negative, piss-poor attitude too??

I always tend to ask how they did it at the last job and let them talk and then discuss the possibilities. I know its tough some times particularly when you keep hearing it over again but hopefully after you explain your situation and why its different that the last job she will start to have faith in you.

I have two in particular… one is the sourest crab apple about everything. She likes NOTHING. And she hates change, therefore she hates me because lots of times I’m the messenger of change.
The other thinks her early departure time means everything she needs is my personal emergency. No I don’t care that you leave in an hour – btw your kids are in college, they don’t give a d@mn if your there or not anymore… trust me.

We have a couple that like to use the “at my old job…” line. We know where they came from and that company went out of business, you can make your own punchline. I like “maybe that is why they are out of business now”.

Actual conversation with a user
user put in a ticket titled- “I need help immediately all my shortcuts are gone!! CANNOT WORK!!”
I called the user “which shortcuts are you missing so I can send you the links?”
user - “just my Pintrest one.”
me - “wait seriously… what about that stops you from working besides actually being on it?”

I have one of two strategies for dealing with people like that. The first involves replying “that’s very interesting, why don’t you write up a proposal on how they did things and why for us to study?” If the suck… er person takes the bait they’ll be weeks trying to figure out WHY things were the way they were “in the good ole days” at their other job. Nine times out of ten you never hear back. The one time they DO send you something it’s usually good for a laugh, but we’ll be kind. They actually care enough to do the work, we won’t tear them down for it.
For the rest, they’re just whining because they’re whiners. Ignore them. You work for the company, not your users. Sometimes it’s hard to remember there’s a difference but there is one.

That needs to go in a ticket and straight to their manager and HR.

Block Pintrest at firewall.
Also contact her former IT staff and ask if this user was a pain in the buns as well…
