I put in my two weeks notice this last week. Mostly because I hated where I worked, absolutely toxic place. So I found new opportunity. I spent the last couple weeks helping out as much as I always have since they lost 2 other people for similar reasons. Those two people were trying to get out for some time.
Today I walked into a firing squad. I walked in and they walked me right back out. In tech, I get it. It’s standard in the industry but a shitty thing to do. You’re expected to give two weeks so they can get their affairs in order, but they don’t do the same so you can get yours in order. I had a really nice email sitting in my drafts for my departure, waiting to be sent to some select people I really valued working with. I held off, because I was asked to keep quiet.
Sitting here with some good German beer in hand (dunkel, if you’re wondering). Cheers to bad experiences behind, and to the unknown in front. More importantly, cheers to a 5 day weekend.
Edit: Thanks everyone for being so encouraging thus far. I appreciate the positive responses.

I would be most upset about having to come in, get out of bed early etc. I hope they are at least paying you for a full work day if not the whole two weeks.
Wishing you the best going forward. I glean from your posts here that you’re a pretty smart dude, their loss.

Oh man, that really sucks… I thought you found a good job… Hopefully you find a better place then. If you are treated that way it was not a good place to be in.

Wow thanks, Chad. That’s really nice of you to say that. Much appreciated.
I work a swing shift since I’m still in school. So work full time and school full time. Was already out of bed for class but I did have to drive down town. They could have just broken up with me over text like a sleazy high school relationship.
I hammered out some health coverage and PTO pay out with HR before I left. So I didn’t get completely fucked over. Sitting here now drinking a liter of some good German dunkel. 5 day weekend!

Here’s your hat, what’s your hurry?
I’d be glad to help you out - just show me where you came in!
The bright side is that they have reduced your window of vulnerability to accusations of misconduct.

In the words of George Herbert, “Living well is the best revenge”. I hope you dust these people off your heels quickly and settle into a much more rewarding job where people actually appreciate your efforts.

All experiences in life are good ones though some can be unpleasant. Learn from each one and you will always move forward.

Daniel, it was great from the outside looking in. I thought I would be so happy. But, I was mistaken. That place’s employee satisfaction is a 3.2/10 this last quarter. Rotting from the inside out. The next place I go will be great. Already lined up, and I hang out with their execs on a regular basis. Very small Idaho company with rock solid values.

Sounds like the new place is going to be a great fit. Good riddance to the old place, and congrats on the new. Have a few to celebrate. I might have a few to celebrate for you!

Wait if they refused your 2 Weeks notice and terminate you instead does that mean you can get unemployment, or a nice severance?
Cheers to moving on to something better!

You are correct in that this is not uncommon, especially in the IT world. After the first time I was involved in this tactic I have never given notice of leaving a position without being ready to leave that same instance. Fool me once…

It happens. It’s not a great way to treat people,. but I do understand the reasons.
Now is the time to look forward; you have a new role where you should be able to overcome the frustration of past experiences, and seek new opportunities.
Best of luck

Charles, doesn’t work that way. I put in my notice so I effectively quit. I could just as well have stopped showing up after I put in my notice. The other side is they can drop you at will. Bottom line is you quit so no severance or unemployment, the title about firing was just a joke.

Michael, very valid point. I’m the last one out of the office so my stuff was packed and out already. I just had to get the things I use often, like keyboard and headphones.
I just remembered I forgot my Steel Series mouse pad. Damn!
