So I gave notice today, going back to school, it will be grand! However, my termination form came through for me to assign to the network admin, It kinda made me go hmmmm.

Why’d you go hmmm? Are you the sole IT admin where you work?

Nope, just thought it was weird, it usually takes several days to process term forms around here, this one to but a couple of hours, it was just weird. September is gonna be awesome though. I cannot wait for school to begin.

+1 for going back to school

IT people are often let go same day. Too much risk/liability for the company.

Yeah, I have seen that happen, but have never had it happen to me. Always had to work out the notice.

agreed, I’d expect to be walked out immediately after giving notice.

Depends on how much trust you have with in the company. my last job I gave a month notice and was allowed to work all of that, I did have to turn in my Key Cards to the police department a day early though. and they had an officer make sure on the last day that I turned in all keys for every town building, and disabled all my accounts.

Here if I turned in my notice they would not let me work a second more I don’t think, not because they care about the IT stuff really, they don’t think about that here but, more of they are very retaliatory here. Actually when I turned my two weeks notice to a job back in high school (Chick-Fil-A) they fired me on the spot for quiting, only time I’ve had that happen. Most people want me to stay.

Only once have I left the company the day I quit, and that was a big company with strict rules. Everywhere else I have worked my notice, with no reduction in the level of access I have has to the company systems.

“You can’t quit, you’re fired!”

I have had to work my notice even at a company that was know for turn in your notice get walked out the door. Where I am currently at they told us a few months ago we are getting laid off. Not only did they let me work 2 weeks after that they asked me to stick around longer to continue to help with the transition.

They must have wanted to show you how efficient their department could be

At my current company I would have to be nice and give them a month notice. As sole IT and how much I have brought to the company trying to find a replacement in 2 weeks would be brutal for them. This is definitely the type of company that would throw more money at me if I actually had another job opportunity…

Welcome to IT Sue. As soon as you are not part of the team you are the enemy because of what you know.

I did not expect to get the heave-ho, was prepared, but did not expect it. I have to admit this is a bit of different place to work… It is a religious organization so theoretically it is about the people, not systems. There is a level of trust that may not be there in other organizations.

I have been really fortunate in my work life, I have only been let go once, a lay-off. After 20 years that is a pretty good track record considering how fluid the market place is and how many economic bumps there have been.

It seems to depend on how much of a control freak your boss is. Some want you out immediately, and some want to get the last kick in by making you work out your notice.

Depends on the company… last place I worked I gave them a 2 month notice… I was the only IT guy and I thought I was giving them time to find a replacement. Turns out they had no intention of hiring a replacement. As soon as I found out I changed it to one week, still I was there for a month before leaving. I could have set so many back doors.

I always expect to work out the notice having no plans on being malicious, but I also always figure if they do walk me out sooner I’ll just give my new employer a call and try to move up my start date. The last two weeks are for documenting in detail what the Hell I do and have no time to commit to paper any other time.

Congratulations! Going back to school is always a great idea. Just not one I currently have the motivation for. So I applaud you!
