The 1st of April is nearly upon us. So what is the best office prank to play?

This recently happened to the office of one of our VPs, and it wasn’t even April Fools day!

You can read more about the context in my latest blog in which I suggest pranks as a form of retaliation for compromising security (e.g. baby powder in the hair dryer for those who reuse passwords.)

But was wondering what ideas you had for IT and office related pranks? Bonus points if you can provide some pictures of the act!

You know what they say about the word assume…

Honestly, any office April Fools joke that doesn’t end in the responsible party being fired is a win in my book.

We got two changes over the weekend… Something Microsoft and something network related. Plenty of source material to scare the living hell out of the folks here…

Everyone could become Pimiento again all of the sudden… or let’s all have the same avatar for the day and play a prank on the community team

We had a company merger a good amount of years back.

Sent out a mail (delayed to 00:30 on April 1st - I made sure the mail would arrive on April 1st in their mailbox) to the entire company that due to HQ guidelines, I was forced to restrict mail storage to some low number, and that we had to curb the amount of MB’s an attachment could be. The numbers were so low I was sure there would be people flipping out over it, since it would seriously hamper them in their work. Would go into effect on May 1st or something.

The amount of agitated people I got on April 1st on the phone… All I had to ask was when the mail was sent.

Responses went something like ‘April fir… DAMN YOU!!!’

A good deal of fun was had. Everyone had a good laugh about it

Ofcourse somewhere around 15:00 or 16:00 I sent out a mail informing everyone of the background of the mail, just to put everyone at ease. At that point the ones that didn’t fall for it, wouldn’t be likely to still fall for it anyway.

Not necessarily IT related, but I’ve considered doing this (of course now giving myself away to my coworkers)

Change everyone’s screensaver to the BSOD.

You better don’t dare prank me or will hide all the coffee!

Got time for fooling around? You sure got time for working.

Being called shallow, offensive and other negative adjectives I have no longer have any sense of humor as I once did. But if I did want to prank a group of people, I feel a classic “shock” prank would be quite in order.

I would forge a mass emailing stating that I had died unexpectedly; I would even buy a spot in the local obituary column of the news paper for extra believability. Then, while everyone was celebrating the fact I was dead, I would suddenly show up, thus spoiling their party. This would be good for a few “laughs” I guess.
