Hi,

I hope someone can help. I’ve been running Spiceworks on a server for several months and made good use of the Helpdesk and Inventory. Recently the RAID controller developed a fault and corrupted the C: drive on that server.

Now it’s been repaired, we’ve decided to take the opportunity to rebuild it to erase a lot of niggles. All’s well bar Spiceworks. I have a full backup of the server’s C: drive from the night before the failure but the C:\Program Files\Spiceworks directory is like a time warp, everything’s dated from April (when I first installed it) or May.

The database is in 4.x format - using an old installer from April allows me to restore the database but the helpdesk is very out of date so this is useless. Restoring to the latest version (5.2?) does not work at all of course.

So my question is, where has Spiceworks been living since May? I cannot find any trace of it anyway, I even grabbed a copy from the original C: drive before it was formatted and it’s in the same condition so it’s not the backup.

Hope someone can shed some light on this!

Phil,

I suggest contacting SpiceWorks directly at support@spiceworks.com they can make the necessary changes to your DB to get it to work with the latest version.

Include a link to this thread and as much detail as you can, (Your environment, when it happened, hardware specs, etc)

Thanks for the prompt reply - my problem is not so much that the DB doesn’t work with the latest version, it should do because it was running the latest version on the previous install.

My problem is that the database files I found (I restored the db and data folders) have not been modified since May, when I was using it right up until a couple of weeks ago when the server died. I have to assume therefore that at some point (perhaps when I upgraded Spiceworks to a newer version) the data location changed but I cannot for the life of me find it.

Hi,

Have you search on all your backup if you have another “spiceworks_prod.db” most recent anywhere?

Probably didn’t change, but did you setup the “Backup Configuration” in the settings of SpiceWorks? If I remember when I last installed, this is not enabled by default.

This could explain the lack of data in the current DB.

I have to be honest, I don’t recall whether I did set up the Backup Configuration or not. If I didn’t, does this mean there is no way to recover the files? I thought the ‘db’ and ‘data’ folders contained the live database files, or is this not the case?

I’ve done a full search of the backup copy of the server’s C: drive and there is nothing containing the word ‘spice’ newer than May 2011, most bizarre.

I think this is created in the default DB folder while the backups reside in a different location.

Default

C:\Program Files\Spiceworks\db

Backup

C:\Program Files\SpiceWorks\sys_backup\db

You can check those locations to see if the data is more current, otherwise shoot SpiceWorks support an email and see if they might have a better solution.

Thanks for all your help, much appreciated. I have now submitted this to support@spiceworks.com and will await their assistance.

I’ve been through the ‘live’ copy which still has no traces of anything newer than May so this is a mystery at the moment!

Hi,

Thanks for all your help, the problem is now resolved. I did eventually find the live data but it turned out to be corrupted. I sent it off to the helpful guys at Spiceworks and they fixed the problem, I’m now back up and running as though nothing had happened.
