So I’ve started a new job and there is no documentation for the current administrator password, and i cannot get in contact with the old one. Now this isn’t for the domain administrator, it’s for the local one. And I’ve forgotten which software i used previously to reset local administrator passwords. Anyone care to drop a good preferably free one?

Note: for windows 7 (32-bit) computer

Boot off a Hirens CD and use Offline Password Changer.

You could also set the password by using Group Policy. Archived MSDN and TechNet Blogs | Microsoft Learn

What Henrik said, but also if the machine is on the domain, you can use an AD admin account to change the local admin. Thumbs up for less work (-b ‘,’)-b

If not a domain system and the system is not encrypted Hirens CD, offline crack, trinity rescue CD work well.

If the issue not resolved yet, you may try our free Lepide local user management tool and check, if it helps you to reset local admin passwords.

Alright issue seems to be resolved, thanks

I’ve gone with Hirens because I’m familiar with it, I’ve used it before but I had forgotten the name of it.

Thanks to all whom has replied.

If you have access to the domain admin credentials, you can just log in and change the local admin password from within Windows under Computer Management->Local Users and Groups->Users, then right-click the user and choose “Set Password”. You should only need a boot cd if not on domain or if no admin credentials are available.
