login with an account that has admin rights and changed the password in user profiles. A domain admin can too.

you have to go to user and manage accounts then pick the account name and there’s an option to change password in there.

If you don’t know it, you’ll have to use the Offline NT Password & Registry Editor. The Ultimate Boot CD includes it.

is machine on the domain?

what specific version of windows 7?

Along with any other user with admin privileges and domain admin you can download and use Hiren’s Boot Cd and utilize the password reset program.

Offline NT Password and Registry editor will do it.

It is included in UBCD & UBCD4win

However the website for it contains the most current version.

+1 Mike

Hiren’s boot CD is da bomb!

Domain environment? If so, why not use group policy?

if the built in administrator is not in use, boot into safe mode and login as the built in administrator, then reset the password from there

yea right Hiren boot … boot the system with hiren boot and walaaaa…

Boot to a Windows installation disk

press enter to install windows now

accept license

Start a repair

when you see the Installing Devices bar in the bottom left, press SHIFT + F10 to get a cmd prompt

At the cmd prompt type: “control userpasswords2” (without quotes) and in the password window reset the local admin password and change to something new

Finish the repair

Then login as administrator with new password

+1 for this. I use it about twice a month to reset a password on customer machines.

A couple things to keep in mind:

  1. The Administrator account on Windows 7 is DISabled by default.
  2. Resetting any password in this way will break access to any data protected by EFS.

Try trinity rescue kit.

If you have a Windows instal disk you can boot to that, select your language, next, select repair in the bottom left corner, Select use recover tools and from the Options dialogue choose Command Prompt.

Rename the sticky keys executable (sethc.exe) in the system32 folder and replace with a copy of CMD.exe. Boot to Windows logon hammer your shift key 5 times and you should get a CMD box up. You can now reset any users account password using

net user username password

To get a list users just type net user, you should then be able to log on with the new password.

Don’t forget to replace the original sethc.exe back where it came from.
