I am a first time user and for the life of me, I can’t find anywhere on this forum a guide or step-by-step on the proper way to install and use this software.

I am mainly interested in the Help Desk features. I installed spiceworks here on my local computer, not a server. (Again, no instructions on the installation so I didn’t know this is supposed to be installed on a server.)

So far, I created my user, I was able to create test tickets, etc. seems to be working for my admin test account. I installed spiceworks on another users local machine and his is running fine but I don’t want him to be an administrator, I want to set him up as a user. No where does it tell me how to set that up. There is no phone number for support. (At least, I wasn’t able to locate one.)

Can anyone please help me out? This software has a lot of potential, but I am getting real discouraged over this.

Have you looked at the compiled help documentation yet? http://community.spiceworks.com/help

Also, SpiceWorks is entirely web based so you only need to install it on one machine. For authenticating users look at the AD authentication in the document linked above.

Also check out the help videos:

Thank you for the extremely quick response! So this will run from my local PC, thanks. The scanning for the inventory seems to be working so I guess I have it setup right.

I setup AD authentication for myself and it said AD is enabled. But, how do you set this up for a non admin user? How do you setup a non admin user(s)?

You don’t need to set-up a non admin user. If you have AD integrations configured anyone in AD can login with their domain username and password as a helpdesk user.

I see, well, it isnt working. I tried to login with my AD email address and my domain password and it says “Login Failed”. If I use my spiceworks login, i get in fine. Setting up AD from the video and documentation is really vague.

I tried these formats for the login:

user@domain.com

domain\user.name

domain\user.name

Non of these work. I tried having a co worker login with his domain username and password and it didnt work there either. I am at a loss.

Use just username and password without the domain specifier, such as

jdavison

Yeah… I tried that as well. Our login format is

first.last as the username, then password. doesnt work.

Can’t spiceworks produce a log file that you can look at and maybe see what is not setup right?

Sorry for all the questions, but for as simple as everyone makes this software seem, it doesnt work “out-of-the-box”

Make sure your non-admin users are logging into the helpdesk portal and not the admin side.

Usually they would log into http://helpdesk url/portal

and admins would log into http://helpdesk url/login

Dont forget to add in the port number if its not 80. ie 9675

This is the answer I’ve been looking for!! Thank you Fazzle! Its working now and Im able to login as the admin and other users can access it via the portal. Excellent Job!
