Hey all,

I just got my new Unitrends Appliance and I’m setting up all my backups. I found that a couple of my VMs running databases, mysql or MSSQL, don’t like to be snapshotted and after reading some Unitrends KB articles it seems to be a best practice to install the agent and treat it like a physical machine. I’mOK with that but I’m having issues installing it on Ubuntu 12.04 since “dpkg --add-architecture i386” isn’t supported on this version of Ubuntu. I was following this KB http://support.unitrends.com/ikm/questions.php?questionid=821 . I’ve done everything else in this article except the “dpkg --add-architecture i386” command and I get this error when I try to run the agent installer.

You must install the package that provides a 32-bit version of libpam.so.0

The appliance is “Unitrends Backup Appliances Recovery-822”

I am trying to install the agent on an up to date Ubuntu Server 12.04 running Owncloud, which uses a local mysql server.

Karl - It looks like we natively support Ubuntu 12.4 & 13.04, but not 12.04. With that in mind, you may want to protect this client as a VM instead of as physical client. You can still load the SQL Server agent on the VM. Instructions are available here . Our support team is happy to walk you through this process at any time, so feel free to call, email, or instant message with them at any time.

Kelly - Thanks for clarification. I’m not a Ubuntu guru, but if they are the same, then Karl should be able to load the Ubuntu agent on the client.

That brings me back to my question of how to get it to work if “dpkg --add-architecture i386” isn’t available in 12.04.

Karl- Which Linux agent did you try to load on the client? Can you confirm that it was lnx32_cnt, client version 7.2.0?

Sure did. That link was a small piece of the KB article that I referenced above that I was following to install the agent.

Karl - This should have worked. Since it didn’t, I would encourage you to call our support team to determine why this isn’t working. They will be happy to walk you through this agent deployment, and answer any questions that you may have about the process.

Support should be able to help you with an easy fix, but since the error messages that you received are not in our KB or forum, I think a direct contact with support is in order.

I agree with Katie (gasp). Backup Ubuntu as a VM, but backup the database separately to quiesce the database. We run into the same issues with our cloud backup solution. We can backup Linux VM’s just fine, but you need to make sure you backup the database using proper tools to make sure it’s in a stable state for backup. To my knowledge, there is no coordination between VM backups and Linux databases like MySQL, Postgres, etc. You can backup the VM for easy bare metal recovery, but still need to backup/restore the database at the application level. Any one can correct me if I am wrong!

Hi Ubuntu 12.04 does support 32 bits packages without problems, steam and skype are 32 bits only for example.

Your problem seems to be that the unitrend installer does not handle the correct dependency.

Just do :

sudo apt-get install libpam0g:i386

Il will install the i386 version of libpam.

I guess unitrend should deliver a 64 bits version of a debian package, this is the minimum for a professionnal tool.

Our 32 bit agent should work on the 64 bit Ubuntu client. If it’s not working for you, please contact our support team.

I believe what he meant is to implement a true 64bit agent, not run a 32bit agent in a 64bit environment. I agree 100% with you Michel. BTW, thanks a ton for the “sudo apt-get install libpam0g:i386” command. That did the trick!

Update: I’ve since created a 13.10 Ubuntu server and they are once again many missing packages that are not explained in the KB article. Katie, it may be worth asking whoever writes the KB articles to make it more specific to certain OS installations rather than a catch all “debian based installations” that doesn’t work on all debian based installations without adaptation.
