Usually while I am working on something, as long as I’m not on the phone, I have something playing in the background. I’m a huge Iron Maiden fan, and enjoy listening to practically everything heavy metal.

What other things are listened to while working, either just as background noise or to help think?

I also listen to music all day. I’m luck enough to have my own office so I can listen to whatever I want, and I’ve been using Pandora for music at work for over a decade now. My tastes vary depending on my mood, my energy level, and the weather, though, so it can be any one of my stations, some of which are reserved for special occasions or holidays:

I listen to music most of the time. My office is behind a council chamber/court room so I do turn it down when they have trials or meetings. I have some pretty loud Bluetooth speakers that bump, so I do have to mind what is being played and when. When I’m out and about, I’ll have my earbuds in. They have pretty good ambient noise control so I can still have a conversation with people while my buds are in.

Outside of music, there are podcasts that I play in the background once in a while but I usually reserve them for the car.

Since I’ve been working from home, I’ve mostly been listening to Spotify. I find that it’s best when I’m listening to music that I already know really well. Listening to new, unfamiliar music tends to be distracting while I’m trying to think. I mostly listen to rock, Indie and alternative but not so much heavy metal. Sometimes I’ll listen to playlists from the 70s, 80s and 90s. Soundtracks can work, too. There’s a massive Game of Thrones playlist that I was going to check out.

Generally any time I can get away with it I’ve got music on. In the office, in the car, in the background while playing a game at home. Often times I’ll even leave it on while I’m asleep.

Right now Spotify tells me my top five artists are Protest the Hero, Periphery, Allagaeon, Rivers of Nihil, and Thank You Scientist.

Very much depends on my mood. If I need to think something classical, jazzy or very familiar, even no music. I can’t listen to podcasts at work because I can’t pay attention to what is being said and what I am doing, as @lamocon said, thsoe are for the commute.

Protest the Hero rips! They’re from my town, too!

To the topic at hand - I go through phases of listening to like, pop punk, post-hardcore, death metal, electronic, etc. I’ll float around a handful of bands for a while and then switch it up, or I’ll let YouTube Music generate playlists for me. I do podcasts as well but I sometimes find them hard to focus on. I’ve switched to noise cancelling headphones at work because I am in a noisy environment.

PtH has been a mainstay in my playlists since I found them back in the Kezia days. I’ve had Palimpsest on repeat almost constantly since it came out, though I still think Volition wins out on being my favorite album of theirs.

I discovered and listen to post-rock all day. I found a youtube user called “WherePostRockDwells” that has hundreds of full albums from a variety of different flavors of post rock. It’s great for background music, and really interesting for focused listening too!
