So second day working here at my new job as Server/Network guy (I truly think that is my official title) for a rural school district. They have a 1:1 technology initiative so we have about 900+ devices in students hands. Thankfully those are the other guys problems, I just have to keep the network and servers up, which should be interesting anyways, since the consultant firm I am replacing owns the physical servers that our VMs live on. Oh the excitement…

Congrats from another server/network guy working for a school (albeit, a posh, private school). It’s nice to be able to sit back and make sure everything in the back is running like clockwork while listening to the helpdesk deal with the kid’s problems, isn’t it?
System Center makes me look like a god here.

Yeah we’ll see how that works when we have 900+ devices that need refreshed over the summer. I might get dragged in there.
I don’t know if I’ll be able to get them to let me buy System Center, but I think I might just be asking for it. Once the consultants are out, Spiceworks is for sure going in.

Congrats! Hope you enjoy it and learn a lot! Let us know how it goes!
I’m jealous of that. This placed used Spiceworks in the past but decided to change to SchoolDude (ugh…). I might be able to move them by to the ways of the spice over time.

Congratulations, Lee! Always good finding a job you enjoy!
So your boxes will be replaced sometime soon? Nice little migration project for you, don’t forget to document on your Spiceworks profile

I have almost complete carte blanche here due to the consultants being total idiots. So glad of that actually. Plus the words “It’s Free” kind of helped my case.

We are actually hoping to buy the boxes from them, so we don’t have to reinvent the wheel and hopefully avoid any possible downtime. Do I think that’s going to happen? Not on my life
Very exciting, congratulations!
Congrats! Sounds like you’ve got some exciting times ahead

Congratulations on the new job!! I almost want to say that you’re lucky you only have to deal with the network, but kids can be masters of getting around firewalls and such. Good luck!

Oh the story of the kid that magically hacked the admin password of the laptop and messed up the encryption on the drive and then said “I got it that way…” has already got me thinking I am going to be working hard.

Cool! Don’t let kids setup a gaming server like they did at my high school. We played so much Quake, it was ridiculous.
