I’ve seen our LogMeIn bill more than double over the last two years so I’m shopping for a new remote control solution. We have 115 people all over the state so we do a lot of remote sessions for end user support.
Splashtop looks good, but I don’t see a way to organize the computers by location. Any other suggestions?

I switched from Logmein central to Connectwise Control last year for the same reason, ever-increasing price.
It is priced per technician. Check it out.

Thanks for the shout-out, murpheous!
Hi Carlton - As you wait for more opinions and suggestions from SpiceHeads, I’d recommend checking out ConnectWise Control (our remote control software)! We have 4 different tiers of pricing and features, ranging from Free to Premium. If you check out our Pricing page and then click on “Compare Packages”, you’ll see a PDF that compares all of the different features available between the 4 tiers. If you’d like additional research, here’s how we compare to other options, as well: https://www.connectwise.com/software/control/compare
If you have specific questions about whether or not Control has a specific feature or you just want more info, feel free to reach out! Happy to help out if I can.

It’s a bit of a stretch if all you need is RDP, but I’ve been using Desktop Central for about a month, and it includes a browser-based remote control applet that works great. The main feature of Desktop Central is patch management, which it can do for most platforms (windows/linux/osx). They also do MDM, Image deployment, a bunch of nice integrations. Overkill most likely unless you can get value out of the other features…
If you have VPN to all of your end users (so you can allow it only on Domain profiles) , you could use RDP/remote assistance in windows, or an open source alternative like VNC . The biggest issue with VNC is deploying it securely and managing it across endpoints. You could probably bundle up an installer/configuration with a group policy/powershell script and configure to use NLA/domain credentials. This is going to be the most work, but easily the cheapest option (since it’s free).
For paid options, team viewer isn’t free for business use, but it works great, and has some pretty nice features. Among the nicest is that you don’t need vpn or any kind of central server, just an internet connection on both ends. They recently switched their licensing model to subscription based, but the numbers might work out for your organization.
If you can benefit from them, an “MSP tool” like desktop central might be a good fit. It can take a lot of the work out of system monitoring/patch management, and give you access to detailed reporting you might not have in place. Some of these products also bundle AV, backups, network monitoring, dlp, etc etc etc. For many years I used a product called GFI Max, which was purchased by Solarwinds. From what I’ve heard they kept it intact as Max Remote Management; it might be worth a look as well.

Thanks for your interest in Splashtop, Carlton.
Over 60k MSPs/ITs have migrated to Splashtop and are very happy with the solution. There are ways to organize the computers in different groups. Please contact Support@splashtop.com or give us a call, and our team is more than happy to walk you through the process.
Thank you.

I continue to use TeamViewer, have used it for years and it does the job at a pretty reasonable price.

License is per active concurrent connection. You can host it yourself, no monthly fees and a bunch of other features
P.S. You can organize your computers by location and assign access permission based on user and groups criteria

We moved to TeamViewer from GoToAssist. I like their central management of computers/users.

We just made the switch from LogMeIn to Splashtop (~750 PCs) only because of cost, and I love it. We can group users and PCs just as well as we could with LogMeIn. Splashtop somehow feels a little more lightweight and eliminates some of the quirks we had with LogMeIn, like updating and clipboard issues. We went with the basic plan, so we lost out on some features, but they weren’t features I ever needed in the five years I used LogMeIn.

LogMeIn pricing is insane. I used LogMeIn Central until they went crazy jacking up the rates. Went to ScreenConnect and am really happy.
I’d personally go for using SolarWinds, I have heard nothing but good things about it. and a few friends who work elsewhere have used it and found it very capable. Some of the other tools it offers like the compliance tester come in very handy in an enterprise or even an education environment.

Teamviewer here. I really like it and when we first started using it, my only regret was that I didn’t start using it sooner.
Unfortunately, the new subscription model has me considering alternatives for future use.

We just started using DameWare by SolarWinds. After some research, I did a week trial including an very informative session with one of their reps, and we just bought it last week. I like it, and it’s almost effortless on the user end which was important to me. Also, because it’s the end of the month AND the end of the quarter, pricing is very friendly right now. We got it for 35% off because of the timing.
