Hi All,
I am having a strange issue, when I have a Windows XP workstation and I format it and install Windows 7 SP1 and perform a rescan, the Spoiceworks Inventory still shows Windows XP. The computername and serial number are the same)
Some more info:
-
I first run a full scan to my network (about 500 Workstations)
-
I export the report and added some more info (like the Asset TAG). After that I updated the info to Spiceworks with bulk import.
-
Even after waiting for a full network scan it still shows the old OS (Windows XP)
-
I can see that it finds the device bacause it shows the correct IP and also it shows the workstation offline/online correctly.
-
No dublicates are created (Shows that it recognizes the devices)
Any suggestions are welcome.
Thank you all,
Pantelis

Follow at least #1 - #3 of this how-to: Troubleshooting Spiceworks Inventory Inconsistencies - Spiceworks Community - and restart your SW. Then start a full network scan or wait for finishing the scheduled.

Please report back (there are other settings too according to your environment).
I have changed the Settings (1 to 4), I restart the spiceworks and the Full Network scan has been started. It will take a long time. I will report back as soon as it completes.
Thanks,
Pantelis
Hi, the full network scan has completed.
Most devices are updated successfully.
I have only some errors that is due to
No open ports for this device were found to be responding.
I have starded troubleshooting this error using this guide:
http://community.spiceworks.com/help/Resolving_Unknown_Devices
-
The firewall is off (due to our domain policy)
-
I tried wmi commands from the Spiceworks server and returns:
C:>wmic /user:****** /password:******* /node:akalokiris systemenc
losure get serialnumber
SerialNumber
R8K6M25
Also Tthe IP that the Spiceworks shows is correct.
So, the Firewall is down, the WMI works… i have no clue what is going wrong.
ps: in some other devices the WMI check returns “the RPC server is unavailable” so i will start troubleshoot the WMI according to http://community.spiceworks.com/help/Troubleshooting_WMI
Any suggestions are more than welcome,
Thanks,
Pantelis

Try to run (with admin rights) this script at the affected machines: http://community.spiceworks.com/scripts/show/181-resolving-spiceworks-unknowns-unofficial
You might also want to take a look at your DNS records (especially reverse DNS). Spiceworks uses ping and nslookup to locate and identify devices. If these return incorrect information, Spiceworks may end up scanning the incorrect device.
Thank you all for your support, step by step i am managing to make Spiceworks work for my company.
@bytesnake: I have not yet run this to the affected machines yet. I first try to resolve the issues with the machines that doesnt have any issues but still are wrong at Spiceworks.
@all: I believe that the DNS has to do much for my issues but I don’t understand why it doesn’t mach the SerialNumber and the Name. Since a domain cannot have 2 computers with the same name and same SN this could be a good match.
And here is an example of a computer, automatically added twice:
Name: akhotenovskiy
This computer had WinXP. At Thursday we formatted and installed Windows 7. Firewall disabled. Computername used the same.
Now at Spiceworks i have 2 entries with the same name and SN!!. Both automatically added with all hardware details correct: Manufacturer, PN, SN, RAM, CPU, but the OS reports Windwos XP Pro at both entries.
Both entries have wrong IP
I run wmi check and responds ok from the Spiceworks server that resolves the right IP. but still the IPs at Spiceworks webpage are wrong.
Our DNS has the correct IP entry. BUT THE reverse DNS zone has wrong IP. We have 6 vlans with different IP ranges so the laptops are changing IPs often.
-
Are you sure that the Spiceworks looks the reverse IP?
-
Why it doesnt match the Name and Serial Number?
Thanks you again,
Regards,
Pantelis
If you run a scan range by IP, Spiceworks would normally use ping and nslookup to identify and locate devices.
For that problem computer, what results do you get if you run the ping and nslookup tools (from the inventory screen) for each of the device entries?
Both nslookup and ping returns the correct IP, 10.1.10.61, although at the devices shows a wrong ip, 10.1.5.31
the 10.1.5.0 ips are our wireless network and 10.1.10.0 is one of the ethernet vlans so i believe that here is the confusion of spiceworks.
My question is when Spiceworks has a device already at the inventory (eg: computername: papostolidis sn: XXXXXXX and ip: 10.1.10.5 automatically added) and while the scan runs it finds the same device with the same computername and same sn with diferent ip why it adds it as a new device.
Further to bytesnake after 3-4 times of full scan with the settings you told me I see that almost all devices are corrected. My only issue right now is some duplicated devices as i discuss with TimJ42
I believe that I am very close to a perfect inventory with Spiceworks!
Let me ask you one more silly question. I dont want to have antivirus status report at the Dashboard so i went to settings and disable the scan for antivirus status. My problem is that it still shows me the pie at the Dashboard. Can i somehow disable this at all?
Thank you all!!
Pantelis
The device you say is being duplicated, is it also a multi-homed device?
If you don’t want the antivirus status widget, you could change it to one of the other environmental charts or just remove the widget from your dashboard. Hover the mouse in the top right of the widget for the controls.
