Hi all,

My inventory scans the network correctly, and picks up all existing (and some non existing) workstations & servers so this aspect seems fine (apart from the non existing machines but I’m not too bothered about this right now) but for some reason it lists quite a few workstations as having Windows XP on them.

These were originally correct though many have since been upgraded to Windows 7 but the inventory still lists them as being Win XP machines. Does anyone know why this might be happening and what can be done to fix it?

I have tried rescanning the network manually, but with the same incorrect results.

Many thanks in advance.

Have you tried checking WMI and seeing what the PC’s are returning for a reported OS?

Hi Jim - sorry, but what do you mean?

Were the problem computers originally scanned by Spiceworks as the XP OS but have since been upgraded? Have you tried at least step 3 from the inventory inconsistencies How-To?

Good point! thanks Tim.

Yes, the problem computers were originally scanned by Spiceworks when they were XP machines and have since been upgraded. They still appear (to Spiceworks) as XP machines even though they are actually now Win 7.

I’ll take a look at step 3 now, as you say. Thanks guys.

OK I tried step 3 from the inventory inconsistencies, but the results are still incorrect.

Anything else I can try?

If you’ve changed the “scanner sends all data instead of deltas” to true, I’d also try an additional manual rescan (from the inventory screen) to see if that fixes it.

If the software is otherwise being read from these computers correctly, but just the OS upgrade is not, there could be something up with the way Spiceworks reads from the registry or the WMI repository. You could try deleting the WMI repository yourself, reboot the PC and then let Windows rebuildthe WMI repository and try again. If the problem is the way Spiceworks is reading the registry, I’d suggest contacting Spiceworks support (support@spiceworks.com) and let them take a look at your logfiles .

Have you tried the WMI command I gave you? If so, what does it return from the PC in question?

Jim - sorry to be a pain in the *** but what do you mean from ‘the box reporting’?

Can you be more specific please? Sorry if I’m being a bit dumb here!

You know, I wrote that, doesn’t mean I know what the heck I was trying to say. LOL

Sorry, must have been in a huge hurry.

From the CMD prompt:

C:>wmic os list brief

C:>wmic os get caption

What is the output?

OK I tried that and they report correctly, so…

I simply deleted all the current workstations in the XP group (deleted, not removed from group) and rescanned. It’s now picked them all up correctly, reporting them as Win 7 machines

Thanks for the help guys!

Odd, that is still a problem as Spiceworks should have picked up the changes in the OS Version.

Indeed. So far so good though - at least I have the up to date info. I’m going to test later today with an existing XP machine (we have 3) which I’m going to upgrade to Win 7, rescan and see what happens.
