Can someone give us some guidance on how we can perform a good software audit?

Is there a tutorial available?

Can you provide more details? SpiceWorks itself will record all of the software installed on your machines. After that it is just a matter of going through the list and looking for things that fall inside or outside of your particular policies.

You can use Spiceworks to scan your inventory and then report. Follow the above How-To linked by pchiodo.

What information are you trying to get out of the audit, just what is installed or the product keys used as well.

If Spiceworks does not work for you, there is a great system for doing this, it is called Interns over sneakernet.

We are looking for product keys as well to make sure no one is using an expired key.

We need to make sure we’re in compliance with Microsoft (Office Suites, versions, etc). No one wants to go to jail.

We did print the how to above and will go through that for a start.

We’ll want a report in the end to show to the bosses.

Thanks for the quick responses, we’re on our way.

I’ve used Spiceworks to compare with what the MS tools though I had

You can get the MS tools here - http://www.microsoft.com/sam/en/us/default.aspx
