I probaly should be posting this in the suggestions, however I find the Water Cooler to be well… Cooler!
Moving on, I’m sure I’m not the only one here who love to see the SpiceWorks Community go full steam as a social network site.
Reasons:
Always a great discussion either inteligent or humorous!
Best place for like minded individuals who’ll most likely be logged on into the crisp AM hours where weird things happen! (My cousins from Zeta Reticuli & Bootes systems making home visits!) o_0!?
Better than G+!!
There’s a lot of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ in social networks based on advertising! Just ask FB!?
Now let’s make it happen Rex, my Reptilian friend from Alpha Draconis!

I spend more time here than on Facebook, G+ and LinkedIn combined!

So what would you like to see to make it more social, and how would you still keep it exclusive for all the IT Pro’s without letting all the users in & ruining everything for us?

If it went from just having a water-cooler to being a Nerdy FaceBook, I could see that being a hinderance to the site.
Performance-wise I’m sure the site would suffer. Also then we would most likely see more attention being paid to the friend request and photo-sharing features than the IT side of the site which is why we all use it.
I already have a Facebook I only sometimes use and a Twitter that I never use (and don’t even remember the login info for) so I don’t need SpiceWorks to be telling me which other techie is having a birthday or which nerdy girls in my area are single… well, wait a minute. That last bit they can do, but I still pass on the rest.
SW Singles mingle, make that happen! Hell, then I’d even be willing to fly out to TX.

I spend a lot of time here… for work and for a chat. I don’t use Facebook and only touch Twitter when I need to.
Spiceworks is more than just social networking and I would prob not like it if it when the Facebook style route!
My 2p’s worth!

You can have your social spicework, if you sing for us.
First and foremost I think this site is about helping IT people get their jobs done and problems solved. The Water Cooler is just a side piece…icing on this great cake of ours if you will. If we try to turn Spiceworks into a social media site I think that would take away from the real purpose of Spiceworks.

I’d vote to keep it as is. Professional, yet has made room to vent and talk about more social things.

also keep in mind, if they go mainstream as a social media site, instead of the current social media site for Spiceworks users and the occasional IT person… you will be opening the door to all the “riff-raff”. In which case you will start having to look harder for those great discussions.
just some food for thought.

Most likely would not appeal to me.
I use Spiceworks for work, check out some of the fun stuff while at work, etc.
But, when I leave work, I generally want to pursue my other interests and spend time with my daughter.
BUT, I could see a 24 Spicechat room or something that might have enough people logging in at all hours.
Just not for me.
I know who the IT Pro’s are… Who are the Cons?

Wouldn’t mind seeing a chat functionality, one2one or group chat, but a bit more functional & integrated than IRC. The rest I would rather see left out. IT are generally an unsociable bunch anyway, why try & change that!!

It’s true that there’s lots of money to be made from social networking sites, but if you look at where the money’s actually coming from, it’s mostly from gullible people who click on everything compulsively.
Spiceworks users are IT savvy, and that means they’re too skeptical and budget-conscious to be susceptible to the typical social networking model.

I have to agree with the general consensus here.
Spiceworks is great in its current form. It’s primarily a tool and a way to collaborate professionally with other IT pros. The watercooler and non-IT sub-groups are just a nice distraction that don’t look too obvious while you’re working.
If it turned into a full blown social networking site, its usefulness would get lost in the social atmosphere.

Keep it like it is. If you want a social geek network then start a page for it on Facebook.
