We’ve had spiceworks inventory for a while. It scans our local network but we don’t keep it up to date (remove old computers) and we have a lot of remote users who never connect to the local network.
We’ve recently started looking into an asset management solution to keep track of what equipment employees have. Ideally we’d want to be able to manage and assign serialized inventory assets such as desktops, laptops, phones, and basically anything else we’d want to track the actual serial number of. We also want to be able to assign generic assets such as “warehouse keys,” “uniform,” etc…
As we never really tried to get Inventory to work this way I thought I would ask if it’s possible. Ideally, we’d want to be able to pull a report that showed John Smith and all assets assigned to that user.
I’d like to eventually start bar-coding inventory but it’s not necessary to start. I also don’t want to use the network scanning functionality as it seems to clutter up the system quicker. I’m not sure if it’s feasible to only install the inventory agent on every machine. Is spiceworks inventory meant to manage assets in this way?
Any advice would be appreciated. We’re open to paid apps / plugins if it makes it easier to manage asset assignment.

Inventory is for network based devices, not assets, many have used it to do what you want but it will be cumbersome at best
Okay, sorry for the terminology confusion. I consider network based devices assets. I guess we’re looking for a solution that would accommodate both. It seems like the network based devices is more difficult to manage, so starting with a system and trying to make it work for “assets” seems like it would be easier than going the other way around.

They are assets, but you want to include non-network devices, which wont work too well, SW is designed for IT kit, things you can discover on the network
Network devices should be easy, if you need help with that, ask.
Your network devices have to be manageable somehow, be that WMI, SSH, SNMP etc.
Okay, thanks for the feedback. It sounds like this isn’t the solution we’re looking for. It would ideally be something with a client you could install on a pc / mac that would report in to give us basic computer information tied into a system that can manage regular assets that were entered manually as well as employees.
