I was reading through a bunch of reviews and I need to hear from more current users as to what remote software to investigate because that 2014 thread was a little off with pricing…

I have used Dameware and Logmein in the past but liked Teamviewer the most because of the management console and simplicity but I find myself in a place now where I really don’t need that management but I still wanted to stick with Teamviewer until I saw this…

Minimum necessary license:

1x TeamViewer Business = C$ 759.-

Damn! I am one admin trying to manage 10-20 devices. I want to be able to manage them through the cloud without a need for a VPN so might need the management features but $750???

So what do you geeks propose I look at?

Look into splashtop. I switched to it a while back and have been very happy. Cloud management. No Von needed. Pricing is decent also. I use it to manage 60+ systems and also family that lives a ways away.

i dont know what i searched that brought up nothing newer than 2014 but glad Sid saved me… i would rather read five pages of current info than wait for five pages to get typed out…

You’re a gentleman and a scholar. The only reason I remembered that post is that I keep getting email on the replies and the last time I looked at it there were like 230 responses, and I was thinking, boy, I’m happy if I get a dozen replies to my questions :slight_smile:

splashtop vs teamviewer: for business, splashtop. for personal, teamviewer. splashtop has cheaper licensing for connections in business and requires subscription for remote access when using for personal use, but you pay yearly. on the other hand, while teamviewer may cost more, its a one time fee and then you own the license for a bit more then splashtops yearly cost and is completely free for local and remote personal use

Jeremy, thanks for the comparison. Yes, Splashtop is subscription based while Teamviewer “so far” is perpetual. However, many Teamviwer users have told us that they are continually nagged to upgrade every year that they end up paying not just more upfront, but the continual upgrades have costed them much more. Sometimes, their customers upgraded their Teamviewer agents to latest versions that are no longer compatible with their current versions… causing issues, as an example. I said Teamviewer “so far” is perpetual is that we also have heard that outside of US, Teamviewer has been moving to subscription based model…so seem like the company is working hard to try to move towards subscription as well. Another item to keep in mind is that Teamviewer charges a lot more for additional concurrency… Splashtop Business includes unlimited concurrency. Splashtop On-Demand Support includes concurrency as well.

Since you mentioned “personal use”… to be clear, Splashtop On-Demand Support is free for non-commercial use. Splashtop Business starts at $60 / user per year, but if you are “non-commercial” user, you can use Splashtop Personal which is just $16.99 per year… very cost effective.

i have noticed that if teamviewer on one system is not the right version, you will be prompted to update, but it normally does it automatically once you accept. they do prompt with a notification if your using a free version when you connect, as well as a dialog box after you disconnect on the free version. is there a free version of splashtop that allows access of remote personal computers?

my understanding is that if you are using Teamviewer for commercial use, to “update” you have to pay $$$…

For non-commercial use, Splashtop Personal clients are free on Windows, MAC, and Android… iOS is paid client. You can remote access for free in the same wifi network… if you know how to port forward your home router et al, you can also remote access from outside home. For vast majority of consumers, they prefer to just subscribe to our global relay infrastructure (Anywhere Access Pack) to seamless remote access across any network… it’s cost effective at $16.99 per year.

Not for cloud side but when you need to manage the users within networks, Lepide remote admin tool is available free and helps to manage the environment in hassle-free manner.

If these are Windows devices, you might want to take a look at Techinline’s FixMe.IT here . This niche industry has to be one of the most confusing in the entire world of IT these days – is there a contest to see which company can come up with the quirkiest sales/licensing model?

  • Been using Teamviewer rebadged inside of ControlNow/LogicNow/whatever they’re called this week. Figured it might be cheaper to license directly, but turns out I have to buy the Corporate version if I want an MSI install. Really? Rolling out the host software with group policies is such an advanced feature it bumps me from $1600 to $3000 license cost?

  • Splashtop is not to be outdone – I’m now told I need to convert my trial account to yet a third account type now: first was the regular one, only allowed Unattended remote connections. So I had it converted to Splashtop Business Remote Support… except you still have to log into the computer with a domain account. Now they tell me I need a third type of account, On Demand SOS – which I can only assume means I can’t log onto computers that I do need to control after hours. Pass.

Now that I’ve been through the wringer, I’m pretty sure I’ll need to validate any other alternative remote access tool for all these crazy one-off use cases (that really aren’t). I’m not saying it’s right, but it’s not surprising unscrupulous people abuse the “free” licenses of these tools so much.

Except now I think it’s easier to just pay the subscription for the rebadged Logicnow remote control module, because it mostly just works.

Sorry to hear the confusion. Splashtop Business and Splashtop Business for Remote Support are the same product, just different pricing models… Splashtop Business is priced based on # of users, while Splashtop Business for Remote Support is priced based on # of computers (with unlimited free secondary user remote access). It offers customers the flexibilty to pick the best pricing model for their needs. Both products indeed are for unattended support… they use the same client and streamer (agent).

If you need attended, adhoc quick support, Splashtop On-Demand Solution (SOS) is the solution. SOS starts at $100 per IT admin per year.

If you need both unattended and also need attended, for one IT admin, it’s $60 for Splashtop Business and then $100 for SOS… total $160 per year for 1 IT admin… If you need your users to also remote access computers, Splashtop Business for Remote Support could be cheaper (since you might have many users)… SOS (attended) also use the same client as Splashtop Business (unattended) so from a single client, you can support users who are either attended or unattended.

or, just use teamviewer since its simply purchasing a license and not a subscription, includes attended and unattended, and includes local and remote. it includes all features with it, and it seams to even integrate into some other microsoft software. not to mention there is no limit on endpoints.
