Have had quite the roller coaster of a week-yes, I realize that Friday isn’t over yet, but I feel like I might be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Had a user’s laptop bomb out on me with the BSOD last Friday(unmountable boot error)-tried doing a check disk fix-didn’t work. So, I ordered a cable to hook her hard drive to mine to try and recover any files off of it I could. She pretty much saves everything out to a folder on the network, so she’s not completely hosed, but there are a few documents she needs off her computer. Set her up with a spare laptop and she is still able to function. Then, came in Monday to find one of my servers was frozen-it was still functioning, everyone could print and get to their files, but the GUI interface was frozen. Couldn’t reboot till Wednesday night just to make sure we didn’t hose payroll going out, so I was a nervous wreck until I could reboot. Came in yesterday morning and the same server was not responding-rebooted again, has been working ever since. The reboot yesterday made me double check my backups and it’s good I did-one set hadn’t backed up since December 1. Ran a quick backup of the set and everything is now current. Ready for the weekend! Doing the last of my Christmas shopping tomorrow, and de-stressing! I think I might even hear some vanilla vodka calling my name! How was everyone else’s week?

Vanilla vodka… hmm
I like vodka and vanilla that seems like a good mixture.
Week has been similar, one failure after another, but that feels like every week now.

We’re implementing a new off-site backup system as well as a new database and interface on our internal software both on Monday. None of which are we ready for so all week (and sadly, tomorrow) we’ve been scrambling to try and get ready for the thousand tickets we know will show up when everything crashes Monday.

Been a crazy week here. Grey and I have been working like mad trying to resolve some really crazy network issues on a complex network that we’ve never seen in person. I’ve been working 6am-2am nearly all week.
Going out drinking tonight, though.

Chandra,
I’ve experienced the “frozen terminal but server is working” thing several times as well. Just in case you haven’t tried it I’ve been able to remote into the server to do whatever I needed until till it was safe to boot.

My week hasn’t been that bad actually, but I am the only tech today (with a full plate of my own) so we’ll see how today goes. I definitely have a bottle of Makers Mark at home that I will be cracking open.

David-It is! Vanilla vodka and Dr. Pepper is the best. Dean-ick. I don’t envy you at all. Here after the first of the year we are switching EMR software, so I will be doing the data migration thing soon. Good luck to you, I’ll be sending good thoughts your way.
I like vanilla, and I like vodka, but I think I’ll stick to bourbon.
This is the week before Christmas break here, and things have been intense, but nothing like some of the stories posted.
Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Happy New Year, and Vaya con Dios!

Erm, it’s the end of the week? blinks wearily
Ended up working 12 hours overtime across 2 nights after a cable link between 2 buildings decided to stop working and the decision was made that there absolutely had to be a video link in place between the stage and backstage at the school xmas concert.
Ended up having to reset the network admin’s password (he’s away on vacation) to access his inbox to locate the email with instructions on how to relax our filter settings to allow a Skype call. Got the link going 2 minutes before curtain up using personal laptop and personal Skype account as I didn’t have the time to do it properly. Had to set it up again a second night.
Both nights I left work at 11pm and came back in at 8am.
Sole IT technician (translation: only one who can turn on a computer without panicking) in the school for the last 3 weeks.
Completely shattered, not happy that another server stopped responding and had to restart it yesterday. Massive bunch of hardware failures, finally got engineers coming in next week (while kids are off) to fix various things under warranty. Almost no sleep, feeling no xmas cheer with the staff who are excited at their holidays starting when I have to work next week and I’m currently not sure how I’m awake and not comatose.
…
Oh, and I have a 3 hour train journey with 2 changes to spend the weekend with my best friend once I finally get out of work. I’ve already warned her my plans involve sleep and little else

Actually been an OK week here, nice & quiet really. Except for an external supplier in a different timezone screwing up the DNS records for our email server & loosing contact with the rest of the world for a while. Oh and the clients servers I was working on remotely out of hours that then would not turn back on. And the client who is getting some emails rejected by random recipients with no discernible pattern or ability to exactly replicate the issue on command. Or the software update that I need installed by monday on servers & ALL workstations [requiring manual work on each], but they upped the system requirements without telling us and some machines dont cut it, oh & it wont run on its existing server.
there go my plans for the weekend
right there with you, its been one of “those” weeks

Spent 90 minutes in 2 assemblies today because 2 Assistant Principals could not press ‘start slideshow’ on their own.
I did run out for the Dell engineer who replaced 2 PSUs for me though.

It’s been insane!
Monday
Negative side: Two computers bombed with a bad Windows update which resulted in a graphics card BSoD on the PC and a multitude of problems on the laptop. Later all were resolved.

Positive side: Go to the company owner’s private farm for a duck hunt the next morning.
Wednesday
Negative side: Everyone and their mother wanted a piece of me.
Positive side: Dropped 3 ducks out of the sky that morning.
Thursday

Sorry, it’s been a long week here too and my already addled sense of humor has become downright strange. We feel your pain, Chandra.
