Dress Reds

The striking red dress uniforms worn by today's Marine Band follows an old European tradition from a time when field musicians doubled as signal callers to denote their status on the battlefield. The uniforms they wore reversed the traditional colors of the regular infantry. Today, the Marine Band still adheres to that tradition, wearing scarlet rather than blue coats.
