Wow. Sitting at home surfing the net on a holiday Monday. The phone rings. A few fumbled transfers of the phone on the callers side and I get a lady with a very strong accent informing me that MICROSOFT has detected corrupted files on my computer at my IP address.
And she was going to fix them for me.
I wish I could have stopped laughing long enough to string her along!! That would have been great fun.
She was rather offended that I wasn’t taking her up on her offer, and she asked me ‘why not?’. Oh so many comments I could have/should have made to her. Including getting her number and reporting her to the Police fraud squad. Oh well, maybe she’ll call back and I won’t laugh so hard at her!

Thats interesting, I have not heard of anyone being phished that way. I wonder how they got your information to call you. Good thing that you were on the line rather than some poor sucker who didn’t know any better.

You should have said, “Well what is my IP address?”

Man, after hearing people on here talk about these, I would absolutely love to get one of these calls!
Sadly, I have not yet had the pleasure…

Want to get one of these calls soooooooooo bad! I want to let them remote in to my PC. It’s a VM Linux box.
I would love to see what they would do then.

If that happens, take screenshots and post for us!

I got one of those at home. Asked them which computer, since they didn’t have an IP address. I told them I have 5 computers at home, and asked which one was in trouble? It was funny to hear the guy struggle to find an answer.

So wait…are you saying that you didn’t let her come in and fix your corrupted files? That’s just crazy. If Microsoft calls and says you have corrupted files, you’re just playing with fire not letting them come in and fix them straight away!

Just been there and done that! Had them on for over an hour and even conferenced in with the Atty General’s office!!

Wow, that’s a new one. Kind of scary.
I’m not sure that I could contain my joy if I received one of these calls. It’s so epic it’s almost bucket list worthy.

I had had a lady that I fix her computer tell me she has been contacted at least 2 or 3 times from Microsoft saying they will fix her computer. I told her that it is probably a scam and told her to try to get me the phone number from her caller ID.
We have had the 3 call in the last two months. We had a user that almost gave them remote control of their PC, but at the last moment decided to forward the call to IT.
We have since sent out a note to emphasize that only IT personal are allowed access to the equipment.
I’m betting this scam is fairly effective overall though, so many people who don’t question when a computer is involved.

I don’t think that was really Microsoft on the phone.
Man, I’d probably wet myself with glee over the amount of fun I’d have with a call like that.

I had one at home about a month ago, and on a Sunday. It was very enjoyable and very amusing.
As I sat there reading the paper and drinking my coffee, I was “actively” engaged in the conversation. I “clicked” when she said to click and I “typed in” what she asked me to type in. All the while, I’m thinking of how the the latest Ubuntu install that I’d been using recently would react.
After about 15 minutes and after a key combination that she said to use didn’t work (after several attempts), I politely asked what we were doing again. When she said worked for Microsoft and that she was helping me fix problems with my computer and I responded with, “Oh, OK. Did Microsoft buy Ubuntu?”
I would have loved to have taped the result: stuttering… mumbling… silence… line disconnection tone. Priceless.
Best 15 minutes of tech support I’ve had in years.
