I’m taking my first vacation in 12 years, and I have to admitt I feel a little out of place knowing I wont be networking, repairing, or being irritated for 10 days. Anyone else feel this way when they prepare for vacation?

Forget it all and enjoy it… believe me, the headache will still be there when you get back.

Try to put everything work-related out of your mind while you are on vacay!

Do they know where you are going?
If they know that and how to find you, then it is not really a vacation.
Myself and one of the other directors go to areas where no cell signal is so we can truly get away from it all.

I have already informed them that the blackberry will be left behind, and they can call it all they want but only God will be there to answer it.

Good answer! Enjoy your time off! Be careful though, once you get a taste of not being at work and away from “them” you will just want more!

Enjoy my good man! 12 years are a long time, that’s half the time I had been alive!

The hardest part, I think, for us to enjoy a vacation is to be sure we have made mental preparations to deal with being gone.
I am still fighting the battle - if I’m gone for more than a day people start assuming that the correct way to deal with a problem is to “try and help”.
We’ve had meetings, conversation, emails, etc. about the fact that for all practical purposes me being gone, or on-site, does not affect support much. True, I can’t do the work myself, but I can manage tickets from almost anywhere I care to go, and make sure someone is able to help them.
Vacations are necessary, so set things up the way you need to to maintain your job, and if that means you are able to disconnect completely then go for it.

Way to go, have a good time. It usually takes a day or so to really let go and realize you’re on vacation. So, I feel the same way, kind of weirded out for a bit. Pull a good drunk in the first day or so and the feeling goes away.
10 days of vacation in 12 years? You kidding or just love your job?

Up until now I haven’t had anyone I could depend on to hold things down while I’m out…

Asking for 10 days off is considered cause for termination where I work.
If you do take a vacation and don’t take your Iphone and laptop or don’t answer your phone you might as well not come back.
